The Scenic Shore 150 success this year was overwhelmingly due to the participants' fundraising and then enjoying their ride through Wisconsin. The success, safety and enjoyment of those participants was the top priority of the Event and Executive committees, which had long been planning the annual bike tour.
The Event Committee, led by chair Laurie Van Wieringen, is responsible for details such as route planning, rest stop planning, volunteer responsibilities, in kind donations, incentives, rider safety and weekend menus. The 10 to 15 committee members meet year-round in helping plan for the ride. "Our goal is to assist the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society staff in organizing a ride that will be fun for our riders and volunteers," Van Wieringen said.
Van Wieringen has been involved with Scenic Shore 150 since the event began. In fact, her family founded the Ride after her niece Jillian Inge Topel lost her battle with leukemia in 1994 at the age of three. Since then, Van Wieringen began volunteering at rest stops and then joined the Event Committee. Her family rides on "Team Jillie." "Team Jillie has been actively involved with the ride for 20 years and our volunteers and riders really give their all to make sure this event continues to be successful. We have met some incredible people along the way and we are all very proud to be associated with such an incredible event." Van Wieringen said.
The Executive Committee, led by Committee Chair Rob Poulsen, raises awareness for the ride, keeps in touch with teams and their captains and connects with bike shops, other businesses, corporate partners and sponsors. Poulsen concluded his term as the Committee Chair this year and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is grateful for his important contributions to the ride.
Dave Ferguson, the incoming Executive Committee Chair looks forward to continuing the success of the Scenic Shore 150. "I hope to continue the work other committee members have done over the last couple years, especially with corporate sponsors," Ferguson said.
Scenic Shore is like family for these committee members. Every year they look forward to the ride and their ability to contribute through the committees. "The number of riders involved and the dollars raised has grown tremendously and each and every year I am so thankful for everyone involved and for the hope we are providing for patients and their families," Van Wieringen said. Ferguson feels the same. "The simplest thing is that it makes me feel good and it supports the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to cure blood cancers."
