Wisconsin businesses Mangia Wine Bar and Alto-Shaam each lost a family member to blood cancers and each took action to help others as a means to honor their loved one. Each partnered with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and began their own fundraising event in support of the LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Mangia Wine Bar
In 1988 brothers Gino, Tony and their father Eugene Mantuano opened Mangia Wine Bar in Kenosha, WI. Chef Tony Mantuano started a marketing masterpiece, Masters of the Grill, that annually brings guest chefs to Mangia Wine Bar to prepare multi-course meals for guests. After Eugene fought acute lymphoblastic leukemia and passed away in 2010, Mangia Wine Bar connected with LLS to raise money in honor of their father. At the 23rd Annual Masters of the Grill on June 28, 2015, over 100 people gathered at Mangia Wine Bar and enjoyed a six-course meal prepared by chefs Susan Feniger, Border Grill & Mud Hen Tavern; John Hogan, River Roast; Beth Partridge & Dan Pancake, Autre Monde; Dan Bonanno, A Pig is a Fur Coat; Jason Gorman & Jennifer Gorman, Mangia Wine Bar. The event's auction raised nearly $18,000 in support of LLS. For the Mantuano Family, raising money for the work of LLS helps them continue to honor their father.
Alto-Shaam
Alto-Shaam, in Memomonee Falls, WI and a leader in foodservice equipment was founded in 1950 by Jerry Maahs. Mr. Maahs passed away from lymphoma in 2006. In 2009 Alto-Shaam held the first "Jerry Maahs Memorial Golf Outing" to honor Maahs' memory and support LLS in finding a cure for blood cancers. The 2014 Event included 187 golfers, 31 volunteers and raised $100,000 for the mission of LLS!
Alto-Shaam held the Seventh Annual Jerry Maahs Memorial Golf Outing on August 8, 2015 at Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex. Alto-Shaam president and COO, Steve Maahs, looks forward to the golf outing each year as a way to remember his father and encourages other businesses to create their own fundraising events too. “Our goal is to support research that will one day save many lives,” said Steve Maahs, Chief Operating Officer and President of Alto-Shaam. “My family is overwhelmed by the support shown by our employees and extended business community. Not only will my father’s industry legacy continue, but his memory will continue to live on as we support the discovery of a lymphoma cure.”
